Black Thunder is one of the most underrated books in African-American literature. It is the story of Gabriel Prosser, a twenty-three old slave who attempted to lead an insurrection in Virginia in 1800. He mobilized and inspired, but not to kill all whites (as some people assume). There were to be no revolts on Quakers, Methodists and Frenchmen. In many ways, this was a class revolt on the planter elite. Allegedly, Prosser had two white co-conspirators.
Prosser was close to success but was betrayed by another slave, described as Pharoah in the passage above. Pharoah, once an ally of Gabriel was jealous, angry and a bit unstable. He felt giving “the alarm” would give him the acceptance and respect he felt he desired.
This is the best way I can describe Reverend Jeremiah Wright, as Pharoah, the jealous, vindictive and once supporter of Senator Barack Obama, who is now attempting to destroy him for his own good. There are rumors he was put up to this by the Clinton campaign and word of a book deal. It’s sad that out of all the things that might destroy Obama, it would be his own. As a dear friend of mine said, “I think there is this belief among us folks of color that we are not racist. Unfortunately, being oppressed does not mean you are immune to the characteristics of the oppressor — Liberia is a prime example of that.” More importantly, Wright not only betrayed Obama but he betrayed many in the black community (and others outside of the community who support him!). The Republicans and the Clintons are surely thanking him.

I saw this letter to the editor in today’s NEW YORK TIMES:
Bob Herbert complains that the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. is harming Barack Obama’s campaign by “roaming the country with the press corps in tow, happily promoting the one issue Mr. Obama had tried to avoid: race.”
How can anyone — Mr. Wright or anyone else — be faulted for forcing a black candidate to address the issue of race? It’s absurd. If America will elect a black man as president only if he avoids the issue of race, then the fault lies with the continued legacy of American racism, not with the pastor who happened to force the issue.
This is the flaw in your argument that I could never quite figure out how to put into words. You think that Obama can only be elected president if he avoids ANY discussion of “race”. If so, why should black people care if he wins or loses beyond the initial euphoria of having the “first black president”?
This way of winning requires a fundamental dishonesty on Obama’s part. Based on the above letter, I think white people are catching on to the lie and are, perhaps, saying no to Obama and his (and many of his supporters) game of pretend.

I know John personally. He’s a nice guy. He is not a NECON (actually he has never voted republican in his life). He does have a soul. Too much dismissiveness of one another when one does not spew out the “race loyalty oath”.

I’m a proud member of Rev. Wrights church here in Chicago and have been for 11 years now.
Let us not forget that we are talking about a man who has a HUGE black church on the south side of chicago, that is open and affirming to EVERYONE. It’s one of the most gay-friendly churches i’ve ever seen. They could pratically hang a rainbow flag outside the building. They also have a same gender loving community at the church. Now tell me how many BLACK churches do you know of where the gays have their own ministy group in the singles community/ministry. and all this was done under Rev. Wright. While the gays are being cast-out, demonized, told they are going to hell, ect at 95% of other Christian churches, they are fully embraced, loved, accepted at Trinity UCC. Clay as a gay man yourself how can you write off Wright so quickly after his many years of serving at a open and affirming church. He supports yall, so why not support him now.
He is a loving, non-racist, theological genius who is being painted as a nutjob and a wacko. I admit that his timing was terrible with his speeches over the past few days. Why not hold off for awhile until the delegates are secured for Obama in NC, and IN. But after being dragged through the mud for weeks, death threats to himself and his family, calls of threats/bombing to the church, death threats on the new pastor of the church, ect.. he has the right to defend his honor, image, and the black church he loves so dearly.
Obama did what he had 2 do, and perhaps one day those 2 will make peace, but for now getting the presidency so that he can positively change the world and this country is important. God’s guiding his steps, he’s made his decision, and Obama can can definately overcome this.

I don’t have a problem with Hillary supporters “believing” in her. I just don’t care. I made up my mind in ’06 that I would not vote for her.
It is not a fact that “only she can win against McCain” That will not be a fact until the day after the election. Gore was the “only one” who could beat Bush; only “Kerry” could beat Bush” the second time around; Dukakis had it “in the bag against Bush I; no way Reagan would get a second term. Uh huh. Oh, and I’m sitting here in Chicago RIGHT NOW, and Wright is no “legend”. He’s well-known, but his church has 5K members, while James Meeks gets 16K and Johnnie Coleman 10K up the street from his Trinity.
He was respected in both black and liberal white communities until his “greatest hits” hit YouTube and he let Hillary’s Operatives book his tour dates.

Last month, Obama stood up and put his rep on the line for Wright, took a lot of heat for it. Then Wright turns around and calls out Obama as “just another politician”. well, Obama did the right thing and washed his hands of Wright (and every black columnist, black media and politicians in Chicago support him). So that’s Politics, Chicago-style – wrong me up, and you’re out like bell bottoms.
Wright had retired to his 10,400 square foot golf-course located estate.
He should have stayed indoors.
We current Chicagoans are disgusted with his “performance” over the last week.
Perhaps Wright (along with Tavis) would do well to remember the adage, “never let white folks make a public fool of ya’”

i disagree with clays comparison of reverend wright to the turncoat slave pharoah. reverend wright, in my opinion, is defending his name and reminding the usa that its history is tainted. how about we compare obama to judas? negroes are quick to claim that obama is some savior while he repeatedly throws them under the bus to maintain his image as a safe black man (i.e. his sad response to sean bell). additionally obama pretends to take the highroad with his smug demeanor and patronizing speeches about unity when in reality he is wall streets candidate for president. the joke is on black folks if they continue to support obama. he is only concerned about protecting the elite, like himself, and reassure his wall street investors that he will keep more money in their pockets.

I have to respectfully disagree with you on that. I was thinking this morning about Rev. Wright’s comments about AIDS while I was reading the NYTimes and something occured to me that I had forgotten about for a while. I remember when the uproar over AIDS was not that it was caused by the government but because it was so closely linked to the topic of homosexuality that the Black church would not even acknowledge it as many of the same congregants of those churches were dying. I remember a mother of five in my church who had been an IV drug user getting sick and dying and not once did anyone acknowledge the drug problem that lead her down that path nor the disease she was fighting.
I don’t want to belittle Reverend Wright historically because I think he has done some good things. But like he said black liberation theology had to be preached at a time when you had to demonstrate that you could be black and Christian. However, like anything that is borne out of temporal necessity as time changes so must we. What he did was not about God it was about spite and scapegoating, making his actions just as political as some of the others. My mother says when referring to people and faults that whenever two people are a part of it you’ll always find two people at fault. Just as the government has had its failings so too has the church and you can’t blame one without acknowledging the other it’s that simple.
I just think that Wright didn’t have to do this at such a heated time in Obama’s campaigning. It would seem that he’s trying to take advantage of his “name in the paper” and use it as a platform; but I can’t put my finger on what exactly for. I hope it wasn’t to “wake the Y-T’s up” because if that’s what he thought was going to be able to do…..
Wright SHOULD be trying to speak to Black America about how, even though we have to co exist and get along with everyone, we need to focus on tryin to re-establish SOME form of community/support.
The best example I use is that, once the quota is filled at the office, a white exec IS 9/10 GOING TO hire a white person over an equally qualified black person. It’s their ppl, they look out, just like every race, EXCEPT Blacks. While that exec may even vote for a black pres, when it comes to what really matters, he’s going with the home team.
Bottom line, this is what the masses have been waiting for: a chance to find a hole in Obama’s credibility, because they can’t simply come out and say, “he’s black.” Maybe if the black masses were not so dependent upon whites/govt for everything, all of this wouldn’t be such a weighted issue to everyone.
