BMW has introduced the latest iteration of the M5, marking it as both the most potent and the heaviest model in its lineage. This transformation is largely attributed to the integration of a cutting-edge hybrid powertrain. The engine bay now houses a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 paired with an electric motor that’s seamlessly integrated into an 8-speed automatic transmission. This dynamic duo delivers an impressive 718 horsepower and a staggering 1000 Newton-meters of torque.

For context, the BMW XM crossover employs a similar powertrain configuration, but with a slightly higher output of 748 horsepower at the same torque level. The new M5 boasts remarkable performance figures, capable of sprinting from 0 to 100 km/h in a mere 3.4 seconds. Its top speed is electronically capped at 241 km/h, which can be increased to 305 km/h with the optional M package. Additionally, the M5 can travel approximately 40 kilometers on electric power alone.

However, this increase in power comes with a trade-off in weight. The new M5 tips the scales at 2444 kg, representing an additional half-ton compared to its predecessor. Despite the added heft, BMW has also refined the M5’s design, with updates including revised bumpers, a distinctive radiator grille, upgraded optics, and a refreshed interior. Inside the cabin, occupants will find a combined screen setup for the multimedia system and dashboard, a new steering wheel, and a host of enhancements to the interior finishes.
