Toyota is developing internal combustion engines that will change the future
While many automobile manufacturers are moving towards the production of electric powertrains, Toyota thinks differently. Technical director Hiroki Nakajima lifted the veil of secrecy over the company's plans and said that their new 1.5- and 2.0-liter engines will completely change the rules of the game
As he noted, these units will be completely differ from the internal combustion engines we are used to and will revolutionize the automotive industry. He also mentioned that the design of new engines was greatly helped by the knowledge accumulated during the development of an engine for the Toyota Mirai running on hydrogen fuel cells.
In fact, we are talking about compact, but at the same time, quite powerful ICE. The biggest challenge for the engineers was solving the issue of the short stroke of the piston, which directly affects the torque. But judging by Nakajima’s assurance, they compensated for this problem using an electric motor. Moreover, their units will significantly reconsider the aerodynamics of cars due to their compactness.
